Kailua-Kona Annual Bill-Fishing Tournament - This annual event is held each August and is televised on ESPN and American Sportsman. It is the largest bill-fishing tournament of its kind and attracts the best fishermen (and women) from around the world. It is usually a one week affair with the most action happening early in the morning when the race from the docks to ocean waters begins. People line the shore to watch the start every morning while drinking "Kona Coffee" and enjoying the sunrise. Make reservations early for this annual event is booked up in advance.

Kailua-Kona Men's and Women's Ironman Triathlon - This annual event is held each October and is televised by ESPN and other major networks. The triathlon is the largest in the world and is viewed by millions as the tens of thousands of racers start off by swimming 2.4 miles, then running a marathon (26.2 miles) and then riding a road bicycle for another 112 miles. The race takes all day with most of the participants continuing well into the night just to finish what they had started. This is Kailua-Kona's biggest annual event and is booked well in advance, so plan ahead.

The annual parade honoring "Pele"- This annual event takes place each summer and lasts most of the day. Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of fire and it is believed by Hawaiians that Pele is responsible for the lava flows. Many centuries ago a very wealthy woman named Pele lived on the Big Island of Hawaii. No one ever saw her unless the volcanoes were erupting. Pele was a very smart business woman in that she had her servants and entourage carry her through the villages just after an eruption. This prompted the ancient Hawaiians to believe that she was responsible for the fire and showering her with gifts and furthering her wealth would be the only way to get her to stop the eruptions and lava flow. To this day the lava flow is still called, "Pele", and many still believe that the spirit of "Pele" will never die .

The annual parade honoring King Kamehameha - This event is held each June and honors the late King Kamehameha who governed the Big Island for a century and was the most successful in bringing wealth and trade to the Big Island. His palace is located right on the main road (Alii Drive) in the heart of the city and is a focal point for tourists on the Big Island.
